Feeding the Homeless, One Meal at a Time

Faith Baptist Church is a vital part of the East Oakland neighborhood and is located in Oakland, California. Faith Baptist's Food Giving Program, in which volunteers provide food to those in need, is one of the ways the church serves the community. People from East Oakland and beyond queue up every other week at Faith Baptist Church to collect free food for their families. Every month, Faith Baptist Church feeds over 300 families and distributes over 260,000 pounds of food through its Food Giving Program.

Faith Baptist's Food Giving Program Benefits from Solar Savings

Curtis Robinson, the pastor at Faith Baptist Church, notes, "The history of Faith Baptist Church is that it was formed in 1984." In addition to the worship activities we provide to the community on Sundays and during the week, our Food Giving Program is our primary link. Every year, we give away over 130 tons of food to the residents of this town. If our electricity costs are lower, we'll be able to increase our bottom line and budget with more free cash flow."

RE-volv helped Faith Baptist Church go solar, installing a 6 kW solar system that will save the church over $50,000 over its lifetime. The 6 kW solar array on the top of Faith Baptist Church will meet 100 percent of the church's energy needs and save the congregation roughly 30% on monthly electricity expenditures. Thanks to their solar savings, Faith Baptist will be able to offer more food to people in need through their weekly Food Giving Program.

With community support, Faith Baptist Church goes solar.

RE-volv This project was led by Solar Ambassadors, who volunteered to help bring solar to Faith Baptist Church. The Solar Ambassadors established a fundraising campaign to offset the upfront costs of installing solar at Faith Baptist and to increase community awareness about the benefits of clean, renewable energy.

Sonja Marwood, the RE-volv Solar Ambassador volunteer who spearheaded this effort, says, "I like volunteering for RE-volv because I have a real enthusiasm for renewable energy." I'm ecstatic that my efforts are being focused on this specific project. Faith Baptist Church benefits from lower electric bills, the community benefits from the church's increased resources, and we all gain from a cleaner atmosphere."

Faith Baptist Church Gets Solar With Community Help

Faith Baptist was able to go solar with no money down thanks to donations from people all throughout the country who contributed to a crowdfunding campaign that covered the initial costs of installing solar. Thank you so much to the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation for matching dollar for dollar every dollar donated to our campaign, allowing us to meet our fundraising goal in just one day! Thank you for your support and involvement in this project with Interfaith Power and Light and Green the Church!
